Warner Bros R-rated comedy “The Hangover” is a full-fledged phenomenon. R’tards everywhere ran to the multiplexes as the pic dropped only 27% from its opening frame to snag another $32.8 million. It looks like a sure bet to top out above $200 million and a sequel is already in the works with filmmaker Todd Phillips eyeing a spring ‘10 start date.
Disney/Pixar’s “Up” added another $30.8 million to its impressive run. “Up” is poised to climb the Pixar domestic box-office pantheon all the way to the number two spot behind Finding Nemo and it’s $340 million.
Finishing 3rd was Sony/Columbia’s The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 with a solid if unspectacular $23.4 million. Pic played to a 54% male audience and suffered from mediocre reviews and star John Travolta’s lack of promotional appearances following his family tragedy.
Rounding out the top 5 were Night at the Museum 2 with $9.6 million and the fast-fading Will Ferrell laugher Land of the Lost which earned a measly $9 million to bring its cume to $34.8 million.
Finishing out of the top 5 was Eddie Murphy’s Imagine That with $5.5 million. Eddie can hold his head up high though as “Imagine” finished a nub above last years summer foray Meet Dave, which opened to $5.2 million.
