UP avoids second week “Hangover”; Land of the Lost DOA

Disney/Pixar’s UP had a strong second week hold to finish just ahead of Warner Bros overperforming THE HANGOVER. After consuming a huge $16.5 million Friday opening, The Hangover seemed poised to take the top spot, but matinees and higher-priced 3-D tickets for the toon UP helped it to a 17.8 million Saturday and a $44.2 million weekend that narrowly edged The Hangover’s surprising haul of $43.3 million.
At third, Universal’s LAND OF THE LOST was dead on arrival as aggressive marketing failed to overcome nasty reviews. Pic opened to $19.5 million, which was less than funnyman Will Ferrell’s last television show adaptation BEWITCHED which opened just north of $20 million in 2005.
Rounding out the top 5 were NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM which dropped just 40% to $14.7 million and STAR TREK which continued its impressive run adding another $8.4 million for a new cume of $222.8 million.
